APPRENTICESHIP

What is an apprentice?

An apprentice is a worker who learns a skilled trade through planned, supervised on-the-job training and related classroom instruction.  An apprentice is a regular part of the work force and earns wages while acquiring important skills. You earn while you learn, and you are paid a wage from the first day you become a working apprentice.  Apprentices are usually paid at about 50% of the journeyperson's rate of pay to start. Your wages are increased periodically, every six months, until you reach the full journeyperson scale. The length of an apprenticeship program ranges from three to four years.  At the completion of the program, an apprentice becomes a journeyperson, qualified to perform the work of the trade and earns full pay for this skill, but the training cost to you is minimal.

What are the benefits of an apprenticeship program?

Apprenticeship is the doorway to opportunity.  Apprentices learn skills which can be used throughout their careers.  Today's apprentices will be tomorrows supervisors, contractors, project managers, estimators, union officials and superintendents.  Additional benefits of an apprenticeship program are:

Excellent wage rates with guaranteed scheduled increases

Paid health insurance

State of the art training facilities

Safe working conditions

Guaranteed pension benefits

How do I get started?

To be eligible to apply you must be at least 171/2 years old. **There is no maximum age limit. Bring your high school transcript, high school diploma or G.E.D. and your current drivers license when applying to the apprenticeship.  If you do not have a high school diploma or a G.E.D. you must sign an educational agreement stating that you will have your high school diploma or G.E.D. within a year. Applications for Commercial Carpenters, Floorlayers  and the Residential Carpenters are accepted the THIRD FULL week of every month between the hours of 8:30 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.  at the NW Ohio Carpenters Training Center located at 9270 Bass Pro Blvd, Rossford, Ohio 43460. The Millwrights only accept applications the third week of March, June, September and December.

Applicants are periodically scheduled to take a D.A.T. test, held at our local community college.  Those applicants that achieve the minimum score and above on the test are scheduled to be reviewed by the J.A.T.C. Selection Committee.  The Selection Committee is comprised or of Union and Contractor Representatives.  The combination of the test score and the score you receive from the interview determine your position on the eligibility list and therefore the order in which you will be called out to work.
